The need for easy-to-open packaging

A growing number of people have impaired hand function. The causes can be several, for example rheumatic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic conditions. Often, hand function is also affected after a stroke, in multiple sclerosis, diabetes and spinal cord injuries. Hand function also decreases with age in both men and women, especially after the age of 65 years. By 2040, it is estimated that around 25% of the population in EU will be 65 years or older. Approximately 15 % of the global population lives with some form of disability according to Ipsos UX team and in many regions the population is aging.

There is a need for easy to open packaging for this growing group of consumers and packaging that works for people with reduced hand function works very well for all consumers. A packaging solution that doesn’t work is signalling that you don’t care about all consumers.

A Competitive Advantage

Companies that choose to develop user-friendly and easy-to-open packaging and products will gain a clear competitive edge. In other words, there are several compelling reasons why a company should test its products and packaging before launch.

The Swedish Rheumatism Association offers companies the opportunity to test their packaging and products, and to have them approved and certified as Easy to use. Companies such as Tetra Pak, Ecolean, Essity, and Nolato Cerbo are among those that have recognised the importance of making products accessible to all. While not all their products have been tested (except for Ecolean, yay, way to go!) and approved by us, we view their efforts very positively. More companies are beginning to understand the value of offering consumers easy-to-open packaging and user-friendly products. No one should have to ask for help to open packaging or resort to tools to access a product’s contents. Thoughtful packaging and product design can help solve problems and significantly improve quality of life for many people.
